Vivid Hair Color 101

Vivid Hair Color

By Sami Cole: @samis_snip

You’ve had that Lush Mermaid hair on your Pinterest board for quite some time now but is it right for you? Let’s talk about some things to consider before taking the wild and wonderful plunge into the wacky world of Vivid Hair Color.

Things to Consider:

How often do you wash your hair?

In most color cases a.k.a (classic foils, balayage, and root retouches) how often you wash your hair always plays a part in longevity, brightness and shine, However with Vivid hair it plays a HUGE role in how long your color will last. Washing once a week is HIGHLY recommended if you want to come in every 6-8 weeks for a refresh any more than that and you’re looking at returning to the salon a lot faster.

How much do you love that hot shower?

Vivids thrive in cold water so rinsing your hair with max temp being lukewarm is just as important as washing your hair as little as possible (having a detachable shower head is a life saver) I know what you’re thinking, cold showers? But I have good news – it’s only once a week!

What products are you using?

Using stylist recommended salon quality products is a MUST. Why spend money on a beautiful color if you’re going to wash it down the drain on its first wash with drugstore grade shampoo? At Paradigm we pride ourselves on carrying the best quality home care for every budget. Some of our favorite shampoos and conditioners include Pureology Hydrate and Hydrate Sheer, Olaplex#4/5, Redken Color Magnetics and Matrix Keep Me Vivid. Any of these can be paired with our favorite Redken Deep Clean Dry Shampoo (makes washing once a week a breeze #NoGreaseInSight)

You’ve made it this far! Now choose your color

Things to Note:

Red and pink fade faster, red color molecules are larger than most others. They have a harder time penetrating the hair and as a result they sit on top the hair shaft rinsing out a lot easier Blue tends to stain the hair the longest, this is something to consider if you plan on switching colors.

Pro Tip

Planning on switching your color on your next visit? The week before your reservation, wash it as much as you can with warm water and a clarifying shampoo like Redken Hair Cleansing Cream. By fading the hair this way, your stylist will have a more even canvas to work with and will likely not have to relighten your already lightened mids and ends
